Dinner at Thai on High, Toowoomba

No comments:
Thai on High
3/52 High Street, Rangeville

After living in Toowoomba for 2+ years now, I've accepted the fact that I've eaten just about everywhere worth eating. Or HAVE I? One weekend, Byron told me he went to this new Thai restaurant (we don't know if it's actually new or if we just hadn't known about it before) with a group of friends. He was so taken by it that when I got back home after a weekend in Brisbane, we went there for dinner, which was his second consecutive visit there in as many days.

I was confused when I first heard "Thai on High" because I swear that's a Thai restaurant in Brisbane. Google reveals it to be located in Highgate Hill. I don't think these two restaurants are affiliated.

Thai on High in Toowoomba is located in the High Street Plaza. It's a large restaurant for local standards and has a neat fitout. We took up a small table near the window and started looking up the menu.

Joey Dents Pi Bar

Joey Dents Pi Bar
Hooper Centre, 187 Hume Street, Toowoomba

It's becoming a rare occasion where I find myself excited over a food venue in Toowoomba. One evening, Byron and I were at Paton's in the Hooper Centre to buy dog food. Well, he was buying dog food and I was pacing around outside, bored, and I spotted a pie store.

Pie's are my 'thing' of 2013, or at least, 2 months into this year, they are featuring heavily on my cravings list. I was never a big fan of pies and thought of them as very unhealthy but 'just ok' in terms of taste so not a worthy food intake. Something's changed and now, all of a sudden... I have pies on my mind.

Just when I thought I'd eaten everywhere there was to eat in Toowoomba, Stain threw one up for tasting. His birthday was last week and to celebrate, the old gang gathered up for dinner at La Pizzaiola; the birthday boy's choice.

I'd probably walked past this restaurant many times without taking notice. The entrance is small but there's a surprisingly expansive dining area inside, divided into several rooms. Larger inside than out. It's like a spacial illusion. We took up a table tucked away in one of the rooms and started perusing the menu.

Lunch at Wray Organic, Toowoomba

These days, work's been a bit more relaxed and I'm starting to get used to long lunch breaks and early finishes. I know that when the busy season comes, I'll be weak and unable to face normal working hours... and will probably just keel over.

In the meantime though, long lunches are great! I still message Marc excitedly "I've got 2 hours off" to which he'll reply "don't you get that every day?"

Metro Cafe for Lunch

Metro Cafe

When I was in Melbourne for a couple of nights in May, I marvelled at how well Mochi organized our dining itinarary. I didn't fully appreciate how difficult it is to be responsible for showcasing a city's dining highlights until Marc came up to Toowoomba for a weekend. Granted that Toowoomba is in no way in the same league as Melbourne... but still, I actually think it makes it harder, rather than easier!

There are a handful of nice cafes around Toowoomba that I don't mind going to. The thing is, when it comes to taking someone else there, you start second-guessing everything. That rule doesn't just apply to cafes in town. I feel EXTREMELY nervous every time I take someone to one of my favorite restaurants in Brisbane. "What if it's not as good tonight" "what if they don't like it?"

On this occasion, I took a risk by foregoing all the cafes I'd actually been to and trying a new one that always seemed to look busy but that I'd never walked into. Metro Cafe it was.

The cafe is small with a couple of tables set up outside. It was quite busy when we got there though. We arrived during the transition between breakfast and lunch. It was too late to order from the breakfast menu but the kitchen wasn't set-up for breakfast yet. We ordered drinks to tide us by.

Banana nut smoothie and peach smoothie

My beverage of choice, the banana nut smoothie, was definitely enough to curb my hunger pangs. It was practically a meal in itself! Or a blended dessert. It was delicious but a bit too thick. Bits of nut kept getting stuck in the straw and I had to come up with inventive ways to clear the blockage (unable to describe in writing without sounding dirrrrty). Marc ordered the peach smoothie.

Vego toasted sandwich on wholemeal - with roasted pumpkin, eggplant, goats cheese, rocket and beetroot chutney

For my main, I chose a toasted sandwich. I'm not sure why but I was really craving sandwich that day. The veggie one spoke out to me, as vegetarian dishes normally do on cafe menus. It arrived flat-looking (guess that's unavoidable after a sandwich press has done its business) and filled with lots of beetroot chutney and pumpkin. The sandwich was lightly underseasoned for my taste but still tasted alright.

Fetuccini - with bacon, mushroom and spanish onion in a garlic cream, and honey mustard chicken

Marc went with one of the specials of the day. The waitress had read it out to us and afterwards, he looked at me and asked "was that one dish or two?" The confusion is understandable. The main is a fetuccini carbonara WITH honey mustard chicken. That's like taking fusion food to a whole new menu! Rather than blending two cuisine styles, why not just add 2 dishes together? Marc's feedback was as expected: good tasting pasta and good tasting chicken but they didn't fit well together.

I thought Metro Cafe was really great by Toowoomba standards and would consider it as a contender next time I'm trying to think of a lunch or dinner spot. Actually, I wanted to go back later that week for lunch on my day off but I couldn't get a parking spot (there were parking spots available but I'm just terrible at parking). Maybe another time then.

Veraison, Toowoomba

Veraison

I haven't done a Toowoomba post in a while... I'm close to running out of restaurants here! Veraison is actually considered a rather reputable restaurant, even at a state level. It was recently awarded two Chef's hats and listed amongst the top 50 restaurants in Queensland by the Queensland Good Food Guide.

In the whole time I've lived here (creeping towards 2 years), I haven't had the chance to eat at Veraison. Last week, however, the Toowoomba dental community happened to have a meeting there over dinner. I was very pleased to be able to finally try the food.

The first room inside the restaurant is small and intimate with dim lighting and neutral tones. We then crossed through an enclosed courtyard that also had a few dining tables, into a meeting room with a bar and projector set up.

I grabbed a cup of white wine from the bar and settled in to enjoy the evening.

House bread roll

There were small dinner rolls to ease our grumbling stomachs. I wasn't expecting much but they were alright. Or maybe I was just very hungry.

Our meal was comprised of 3 courses. The way it was set up was that with each course, there were 3-4 different dishes (more variety in dessert) and what you got was the luck of the drawer. It was a bit like how weddings tend to be alternating dishes... but with more alternations.

At this point, I'd like to remind everyone that this meal at Veraison was a set menu, mass catering deal for a business dinner. It may not accurately reflect the standards of a sit-down meal for regular patrons.

Roast beetroot salad - with rocket, goats cheese, walnuts and extra virgin olive oil

My entree was the beetroot salad. It was a simple affair with a couple portions of roast beetroot, some rocket leaves, goats cheese, walnuts and a splash of olive oil. I had originally been landed with the scallop soup but swapped for the salad because I have a thing for beetroot. I'm glad I did. The salad was a classic combination of flavors that worked predictably well. It's something that I could easily throw together at home though.

I wasn't going to personally sample everyone else's food so I started gathering feedback from my work buddies. Everyone had a crack at coming up with blog aliases too.

Smoked cauliflower soup - with Hervey Bay scallops

Randy had the scallop soup that was orignally set in front of me. He said it was fairly good but the soup was slightly too salty and the scallop was 'chewy'.

Banyard farm quail - with raisin and pine nut agro dolce and polenta gnocchi

Pizza and Stain had the quail. Their comments were that it was messy to eat and the quail was a tad dry. There was a lot of debate about what the little golden bricks were. Pizza called them cheese logs. Stain said they were eggy. Princess didn't try any but as a vegetarian, she confidently pronounced them to be polenta. In the end they asked the waitress who said they were in fact polenta gnoccchi... with cheese. So everyone was partially correct. The consensus was they tasted good anyway.

Free range chicken breast - with creamy potato mash and organic mushrooms

My main was the chicken on a bed of mash, with grilled mushrooms. The chicken had a nice flavor and wasn't dry, although for me, it was too garlicky. I am rather garlic-sensitive though so it may not be an issue for others. The mash was silky and creamy but I think that might be because it's more butter than potato.

Polenta gnocchi - with mushrooms and rocket

Princess had the vegetarian main which comprised of what appeared to be the mushrooms from my main and larger squares of the gnocchi from the quail entree.

Pan-fried Tasmanian ocean trout - with pickled beets, broccolini and watercress and dill creme fraiche

Pizza scored the fish main. She said the fish itself was good. I spied pieces of beetroot that looked like they came from my entree. Hmm... some food recycling going on here? I asked her what the green sauce was and she wasn't sure but said it was yum. I tried a bit but couldn't tell either so I checked the menu, which says it's watercress and dill.

New England lamb shoulder - wrapped in speck and served with slow roasted baby tomatoes and kiplers

In my opinion, the strangest main was the meat log. I actually asked a few people what they thought it was an the response was meat log. Superman said it was basicall corned beef rolled in bacon. Being a typical man, he made out that was a good thing. To me, it sounds kind of disgusting. I was relieved to have been given the chicken. According to the menu, it's actually lamb shoulder wrapped in speck (which is kind of like bacon, so he gets a point there).

Poached pear - with chocolate creme anglais

There were 4 different kinds of desserts. I was eyeing the plates as they were handed out and thoroughly disappointed when I was presented with the poached pair. I don't get what the deal is with poached fruit. I imagine it has to be done perfectly to be worth having over say, a chocolate fondant. This wasn't an outstanding poached pear. I kept thinking of how George from Masterchef emphasizes that poached pear can be eating with a spoon. This was a bit too firm for that. The worst part though, was the sauce. It was served with a runny chocolate custard of all things. We all agreed that it tasted exactly like Yogo. Some people like that... I HATED it. Spiced pear and chocolate custard? What the hey??

My inability to eat my own dessert made me end my reluctance to try everyone else's food. I dug into each other type of dessert, except for Stain's creme brulee but only because that was too far away (and because he polished it off before I could get there).

Lime and coconut cake

The lime and coconut cake was comparatively good on first bite but it was a bitter lime zest aftertaste. Princess warned me of this but even so, I was taken aback but just how bitter it was. It was intense! In an off-putting way.

Strawberry tart - with whipped cream

Pizza's dessert was the most palatable. We tried to analyze exactly what it was and Pizza's conclusion was that the texture was like cake batter in a tart shell. There was nothing profound or skilled about this and it tasted very much like a supermarket ready-made tart shell, but at least it was sweet and 'normal' with no funky components.

Creme brulee

As I said, I didn't try the creme brulee but Stain RAVED about it. Not only that, his cup and plate were both dishwasher-quality clean by the time he had finished licking off every last molecule of dessert. I would say that is testiment to a dish well enjoyed.

I wasn't blown away by the food I tasted at Veraison. At best it was boring and at worst (the pear dessert), it was inedible. Stain and Randy were surprised by my opinion as they thought their meals were quite good. Pizza remarked that it was hit and miss. I'll say that when compared to my usual restaurant ventures, it is way below par. However, considering that it was a mass catering effort, it was borderline acceptable

I'm not willing to give them a free pass for dishing out those reject dessert and recycled main/entree components though. I've had some meals elsewhere that were catered to large groups for conferences and workshops that were AMAZING. It can be done. If Veraison wants to pride themselves of being a contender in top QLD food culture, it needs to step up its game in ALL aspects of service, including group set meals.

Yes, it's been a long dry spell of not-blogging. I can't help it! It's a busy time of the year. For some, that might mean plenty of opportunities to dine out at new restaurants. For me, it means I'm running around all over the place organizing with barely any time to eat/cook.

I know that a Toowoomba cafe entry is not exactly the most exciting bounce back into writing posts but in my defense, this cafe is actually quite good. Also, I want to get it out of the way because I have LOTS of exciting restaurants coming up this weekend and over the next few weeks (in a few locations across Australia).

Wendland Olives for Breakfast and Lunch

No comments:
Wendland Olives

I remember when Mochi first told me about Wendland Olives. Man, that feels like a long time ago now. How fast has this year flown? Her sister had come up to Toowoomba for a visit so they'd been doing a whirlwind inspection of all of Toowoomba's touristy sites (you can count them on one hand).

Mochi's exact words were that Wendland Olives 'was like a cafe in New Farm'. That, for someone who lives about 130km away from New Farm, and indeed any other suburb in Brisbane that houses fine cafes, was music to my ears.

What happens when you live in Toowoomba and you've run out of new places to eat? Drive further out.

Mochi discovered this cafe called The Chocolate Cottage about 15min out from Toowoomba CBD in an adjacent town called Highfields.

I know that on the scale of Brisbane, 15min is nothing. In fact, it would be considered 'close-by'. In Toowoomba, 15min feels really out of town.

In fact, I believe Byron actually said to me "I can't believe we're driving all this way for breakfast".

That's what happens when you live out rural - your perception of reality gets screwed.

Anyway... despite his grumbly, Byron did drive us 'all the way' to Highfields on a recent Saturday morning.

Sofra Turkish Cuisine in Toowoomba

I've mentioned already that it's getting harder and harder for me to find new restaurants to try in Toowoomba. I'm slowly exhausting everything this town has on offer. This is why the opening of a brand spanking new restaurant will pull me in like a moth to flame.

Byron first mentioned Sofra to me while the space was still being fitted. By the time Mochi and I were planning a catch-up dinner, it was open to the public and ready to roll.

We were SO EXCITED to spy a Toowoomba restaurant we hadn't been to before. Mochi and I were having Thai one day and thought 'hey... what's that?'

Olive Branch looked like a bar slash cafe from the outside but when we decided to eat there one night, we discovered it was more like a fine dining restaurant.

Encores at the Empire in Toowoomba

Ok. So. Byron and I started doing date night. After nearly 3 years of togetherness, we thought it'd be a good idea to introduce this to prevent the weeks from getting too monotonous. However, we soon realized that while our intentions were good, living in Toowoomba made things tricky. We are close to exhausting every single restaurant in Toowoomba.

... and then, Byron recalled Encores. He had a Christmas work function there last year and from what he could remember, the food was half decent.

We drove there after work on Friday and though I got dressed up and curled my hair, I felt more like a pensioner than girl on romantic dinner. It was 6pm and the sun was still in the sky. In theory, we could have left the house later but a routine of eating straight after work means your stomach objects to waiting that long. I'm ashamed to admit that Encores wasn't even open when we arrived but the waiter was kind enough to let us take a seat and start ordering drinks.

When I mention I have a food blog and that I live in Toowoomba, the first question on most people's lips is 'have you been to Weis Restaurant?' I suppose it's the only restaurant of any fame in Toowoomba... but up until last week, my answer was sadly 'no'.

Amusingly, I was going to go to Weis on my birthday back in March this year but decided it was too dear. How I ended up going last Friday was: we tried to go to Sizzlers (yes, I do want to go to Sizzlers at times, don't flame me please) but the queue was too long so we went to Weis instead. Basically a similar fling but more upmarket.

I had a precious and much appreciated Saturday morning off work last weekend. We were thinking about making a breakfast feast at home but without eggs, there weren't many options. Eggs are the life force of a good breakfast!

Never fear, there's always the option of going out. I wanted to try Engine Room Cafe because (and pardon me if this seams like a ridiculous reason) I'd seen people Check-In to it on Facebook and people seldom check in to places that aren't good.

Vista Restaurant in Toowoomba

Vista Restaurant
39 Margaret Street, Toowoomba

This post is long overdue because I didn't write it up straight away and Melbourne interfered. I went to Vista a couple of weeks back with my work mates. To avoid the confusion of saying 'one work mate ordered blah and another ordered bleh', I'm taking the initiative to get creative with some aliases.

One I've named Pizza because she makes good pizza. One is Pony because she likes horsies and her boyfriend came up with a rad name for himself, which we've all forgotten so I'm calling him Starfish... for no good reason.
