Coffee and Carvery
Shop 13, Mount Ommaney Shopping Center
There's not many eating options here around Mount Ommaney. I don't mean any offense to other residents here - you've got to understand firstly that I'm 'handicapped' by not having a drivers license or a car for that matter. Basically, I'm restricted to a 1km walking radius around my house. Except, I live on a hill and am unwilling to walk up the hill (purely out of laziness) so my grazing area is further restricted to 'down the street'. In short, just Mount Ommaney Shopping Center and the small collection of food stores near it.
Inside the shopping center, you have your basic McDonalds and Subway type thing. There's one Coffee Club and one independent cafe. There was a sushi train but it's now gone. Outside the shopping center, my options extend to KFC, Pizza Hut and Dominos. Not very exciting stuff but it's my punishment for not learning how to drive.
It's therefore understandably exciting for me to try all that the Shopping Center has on offer. Coffee and Carvery is one such place that allows you to extend your options beyond chain fast food. I appreciate that.
As far as expectations go, Coffee and Carvery has no nasty or super-pleasant surprises. It is like any other run-of-the-mill carvery that you'd find in your generic local shopping center. There is a simple menu with the kind of items you'd expect to find: roast meals and sandwiches being the main offerings.
We weren't feeling very creative so we just ordered a roast meal and sandwich. It makes sense, really. We were very peckish though so we also ordered a plate of nachos and managed to use up all our change.
I consider this type of dining to be a slight step up from fast food but not much so. There is an enclosed eating area, as opposed to a communal food court. That's a good start. You get a table number and there is table service. It's still sort of like fast food though because most menu items are partially prepared and you don't have a long wait till you get what you ordered.
The nachos arrived first and we greedily dug into them. They are very simple nachos - no meat and probably just pre-bought salsa, cream cheese and cheese heated up over some corn chips. Nothing you can't do at home.
I had ordered a roast pork sandwich with coleslaw and apple sauce. I was quite impressed by how this looked when it came out. Sandwiches are relatively basic meal items but sometimes, they look so good they can really make you drool. This was one of them: piled high on fluffy white bread and some decorative pork crackle pieces over the top.
Everything tasted fresh and simple, which is what you want in a sandwich. Nice and fresh.
Charlie ordered a lamb dinner which came with chips, gravy and a salad. There were only 2 slices of meat (you can order different sized meals) although the plate as a whole was quite substantial.
With both our orders, we thought the meat was reasonable well seasoned and tender.
Coffee and Carvery is somewhere I'd go to for a reliable roast meal. I probably wouldn't order their other items, since the nachos were quite boring. It's not 'cuisine' but it doesn't pretend to be. As a local, I need places like this around to maintain some variety.
